South Korea's Samsung says its latest camera can upload pictures over high-speed fourth-generation (4G) networks without having to be connected to a computer. The tech giant says its Galaxy Camera will be directly connected to WiFi and third-generation (3G) networks as well as the 4G LTE network, allowing users to upload pictures to social media such as Twitter and Facebook right after taking them, China's Xinhua news agency reported Thursday. Running 4.1 Jelly Bean, the latest version of the Android operating system, the 16.3-megapixel camera is equipped with a 4.8-inch touch screen, Samsung said. While the Galaxy is not Samsung's first Internet-connected camera, the company said it operates more like a smartphone, allowing users to download apps aimed at polishing photos or videos, automatically share images stored in the camera by communicating with mobile devices located nearby, or to have the images automatically stored in a cloud-computing server. "The Galaxy Camera incorporated telecommunication function into a camera for the first time in the world," Shin Jong-kyun, head of Samsung's mobile business, said at a launch event at the company's Seoul headquarters. "It will open a new chapter in the digital camera industry." Galaxy Camera users will have to subscribe to a wireless carrier if they want to enjoy the telecommunication function of the camera, which will bring mobile data usage charges.
