Industrial action planned for today by Financial Times hacks has been called off. An internal email from the Pink 'Un’s managing editor, Lisa MacLeod, delivered the news to staff. On top of a guarantee that pay rises will remain at 3.5pc MacLeod promised staff extra additional bonuses to keep them sweet - an editorial profit-related bonus worth £394 per person and a Pearson cash bonus of £270. That should help the FT pay its bar bills. Towards the end of Tuesday evening’s Press Awards, held at the Lancaster London Hotel, a waiter hot footed across the room to stop the Pink 'Un’s table leaving without paying the £200 tab. Back to MacLeod’s note. It ended: “We can now all focus on producing outstanding journalism.” Bar one highly commended, the FT left the Press Awards empty handed. Over to the House of Commons. Moments before the Budget George Osborne sat through the Prime Minister’s Question Time dipping his hand into his pocket, reaching for a bag of sweets. Spinners at the Treasury declined to comment on his choice of candy. There were issues of national importance to address apparently. Harrumph. Perhaps George needed a sugar hit to power him through his near one-hour sermon, or fancied doling out a few jaw breakers to a noisy opposition. George spells it out The next Diary entry won’t sweeten the Chancellor’s mood. On page 46 of the Budget he condemns schools for letting children down. According to Government basic spelling isn’t taught properly. Point 1.241 promises to build “on the support already availible”. Point taken. Food manufacturer Kraft, parent company of Cadbury, opted for Budget day to announce rebranding news. Maybe the US firm was worried it wouldn’t go down well with the British confectioner, which will now be part of its snacks division, which has been renamed Mondelez. “Monde” comes from the French word for “world” and “delez” is a fanciful phrase for “delicious” - according to those linguists at Kraft. The name may not be American but at least it was all home-made - cooked up by two employees.
