Al Azhar is keen on providing every possible support for the Chechen people to face extremist thoughts, Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed El Tayyeb, now on a three-day visit to Chechnya, said on Thursday.
"Over the past 1,000 years, Al Azhar has maintained the moderate approach of Islam and showed keenness on serving Muslims everywhere," Tayyeb said during a meeting with Chechnya's leader Ramzan Kadyrov at the presidential palace in the Chechen capital Grozny.
He further praised the tremendous progress that has been achieved in Chechnya under Kadyrov's rule.
Kadyrov, for his part, thanked Tayyeb for his efforts to serve Islam and Muslims across the world.
He pointed out that his country has exerted strenuous efforts to eradicate extremist thoughts.
