Pee-wee's Big Holiday, with Paul Reubens returning as the childlike title character, is to premiere on Netflix.
Reubens and Judd Apatow are producing the project, which Reubens wrote with Paul Rust. The film will highlight friendship and destiny as Pee-wee Herman goes on his first-ever holiday after meeting a mysterious new friend.
John Lee will make his feature film directorial debut on the movie and plans to begin production on it in March.
"We didn't hesitate for a moment knowing that Pee-wee's Big Holiday was such a passion project for Paul and Judd and we are delighted by the opportunity to introduce such a beloved character to a new generation," Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement Tuesday. "We are thrilled to bring our viewers around the world the wonder of Pee-wee Herman."
"As a fan of Pee-wee Herman since he first appeared on The Dating Game, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the brilliant Paul Reubens on this film. It is a dream come true," added Apatow.
Reubens, who has played Pee-wee Herman in multiple films and TV shows since the 1980s, said he's been dreaming about this movie's release for the past four years.
"Netflix was waiting by the mailbox for red envelopes to arrive. I've changed all that," the actor said. "The future is here. Get used to it. Bowtie is the new black."
