Sara Bareilles gave a heart-wrenching performance of Nat King Cole's "Smile" while honoring members of the entertainment industry who have died at the 66th Anual Emmy Awards Monday night.
Among those being honored were Ralph White, Paul Walker, Maximilian Schell, Casey Kasem, Juanita Moore, Sandy Frank, Russell Johnson, James Avery, Daniel Blatt, Sandi Fullerton, Hank Rieger, Paul Mazursky, Anna B. Davis, Eli Wallach, Lucy Hood, Hal Cooper, Michael Filerman, Aman Landsburg, Philip Seymour Hoofman, Peter O'Toole, Litzie Welch, Don Pardo, David Brenner, Shirley Temple, Efrem Zimbalist Jr., Carmen Zapata, Mickey Rooney, Sid Caesar, Elaine Strich, James Garner and Robin Williams.
Bareilles' soulful performance was followed by Billy Crystal's homage to the Mrs. Doubtfire star. Crystal shared personal stories about his friendship with the actor during his speech and called Williams "the best friend you could ever have."
"It's very hard to talk about him in the past because he was so present in all of our lives," Crystal said. "For 40 years he was the brightest star in the comedy galaxy."
He went on to compare Williams to "some of the brightest of our celestial bodies" who still shine on Earth even once extinct. Crystal's speech was followed by a series of clips from the actor's funniest moments.
