The film tackles a critical time in American history, depicting 10 weeks during 1964 called the freedom summer project, a movement which started in Mississippi state with over 700 students aiming to garner attention and protest against the racial segregation across the nation.
Stanley Nelson is an American documentary director whose films look into the history and experiences of African Americans. His latest film, The Black Panthers: Vanguard of a Revolution, was shown earlier in this year’s Sundance Festival.
Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in Januray 2014, the Freedom Summer won the second audience award at the San Francisco International Film Festival and Best Documentary award at the Pan African Film Festival the same year.
