Sharm el Sheikh
Cairo - MENA

The Egyptian-British Parliamentary Friendship Association – which comprises members of the British House of Lords and House of Commons – cooperates with the Egyptian embassy to lift the British travel ban to the Red Sea resort city of Sharm el Sheikh, the association head said.

During a meeting organized by the association at the British parliament, Gerald Howarth said he attended the ceremony in Sharm el Sheikh marking the 150th anniversary of establishing the Egyptian parliament and he saw the tight security measures at the airport and in the city, according to an Egyptian Foreign Ministry press release on Friday.

He urged the British premier to lift the ban immediately, a call that was echoed by representatives from the British travel agencies in view of the losses encumbered by the agencies and the Egyptian economy.

Travel agencies representatives said British tourists are in need to reinstall Egypt to the tourist destination list as Egypt is an attractive and low-price tourist hub, the statement said.

The British travel agencies agreed to jointly defend their interests and help the Egyptian embassy lift the ban.

Britain suspended flights to Sharm, which has been a staple winter sun destination for the British for years, in the wake of the crash of a St Petersburg-bound flight shortly after take off in October 2015 in Sinai. The loss of the Metrojet plane caused the deaths of 224 Russian passengers and crew.
