Algiers - APS

An integrated vision of the Algerian maritime and port sector based on the construction of a modern transport system is “essential” to increase the market share of the national pavilion whose current level is derisory, said Transport Ministry.
“The increase in trading by sea, against a background of economic changes in the world, requires the adoption of comprehensive management of the sector, based particularly on the reconstruction of the national pavilion, ship repair and development and the modernization of ports,” Director of Studies at the Ministry Abdelkrim Rezal told APS.
“About 95% of Algeria’s trading is carried out today by sea, this is why the public authorities decided to reorganize and reconstruct the national pavilion for strategic reasons particularly the port traffic control,” he said.
During the last three years, an important budget has been devoted to the integrated development of the maritime and port sector, said Rezal, adding that credits have been allocated to purchase 25 cargo ships and two vessels for passengers.
“The Algerian fleet was in the 1980’s ranked among the world’s first 50 fleets because it had the  most modern and sophisticated ships of the region,” he added.
