Outrigger has purchased its first resort in the Maldives.
The Konotta Island Resort is a partially completed luxury resort situated in the Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. Outrigger will now complete the outstanding development work and renovate the existing resort before relaunching it as the Outrigger Konotta Maldives Resort in July 2015.
“This latest acquisition marks the continued successful expansion of Outrigger in the Indian Ocean and fits perfectly with Outrigger’s aim to be the world’s premier beachfront resort brand,” said David Carey, president & chief executive officer of Outrigger Enterprises Group. “The Outrigger Konotta Maldives Resort will be operated and marketed as a high-end premium property located in a magnificent atoll setting.”
The private island of Konotta is located 340km south of the Maldivian capital Malé, and can be accessed via a 55-minute flight from Malé to Kaadedhdhoo Airport, followed by a 20-minute speedboat ride to the resort.
When it opens next year, Outrigger Konotta will feature 27 beachfront pool villas and 21 overwater pool villas. Four additional beachfront pool villas and an overwater presidential villa are also planned. Facilities and services at the resort will include a range of restaurants and bars, a marine education centre, spa and retail outlets.
Since embarking on its Asia Pacific expansion plan in 2008, Hawaii-based Outrigger has grown its presence to Phuket, Phi Phi Island, Fiji, Australia, Guam and Mauritius, with new properties in China and Vietnam in the pipeline.
“In the Maldives, Outrigger will create a unique resort experience that will attract discerning travellers from around the world,” said Darren Edmonstone, Outrigger’s managing director for Asia Pacific. “Our acquisition in the Maldives builds on 67 years of iconic resort management expertise developed within Outrigger.”
