Spanish airline Islas Airways closed temporarily in order to reorganize its financial and business structure, the Councilor of Public Works and Transport of the Canary Islands Domingo Berriel announced on Monday. The airline, based in Tenerife, the Canary Islands, has been suffering from economic problems for several weeks, which have forced the cancelation of a number of flights. A total of 38 flights were canceled from a scheduled total of 66 on Monday. Spanish unions claimed airline workers have not been paid for three months. Islas appears to be following the path of Spanair, which was forced to close in January when the regional government of Catalonia was unable to continue subsidizing the company in the face of continued losses.
