Ahmed Fahmy heads Egyptian Shura Council
Cairo – Akram Ali
The Muslim Brotherhood nominee Ahmed Fahmy won the position of the Speaker of the Shura Council, with a consensus of 175 votes, while five were invalid. Fahmy said in a speech after the announcement
of his appointment that he had received a message from Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, the Head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), where the Marshal demanded the Shura Council to cooperate with the People’s Assembly to realise people’s aspirations and hopes, stressing that the elections took place to fulfil the pledge of the SCAF that it would not be a substitute for legitimacy. According to Fahmy's speech, Tantawi said in the message that with the elections the SCAF has fully handed over the legislative power.
The Shura Council conducted its first session on Tuesday, headed by the elder member (in terms of age), to select the Speaker and the two deputies.
