Meeting was chaired by interim President Adly Mansour Cairo – Akram Ali Egypt's National Security Council ended a meeting on Monday evening, the first since the ousting of the President Mohammed Morsi. The meeting was chaired by interim president Adli Mansour, and sources revealed to Arab Today that talks included ways to end the pro-Morsi sit-ins in Rabaa el-Adwyia and al-Nahda squares without any bloodshed.
The sources said no decision was met instead it was only discussed how to end the sit-ins without involving security forces.
The sources added that meeting participants included Vice-President for Foreign affairs Mohamed ElBaradei, Prime Minister Hazem al-Beblawi, Defence Minister General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim and Finance Minister Ahmed Gamal.
The council will reportedly issue a statement Tuesday morning, announcing what was discussed in the meeting or Presidential media advisor Ahmed El-Meslmani may issue a press release.
The National Security Council is responsible for approving strategies for establishing security in Egypt when it is facing disasters or crises and to take any necessary steps to contain the situation. The council is also responsible for identifying any threats to Egyptian national security and undertaking any necessary actions to address them.
It differs from the National Defence Council, which is tasked with reviewing the country’s internal affairs and security and discussing the budget of the armed forces budget.
The National Defence Council has held three meeting since the ousting of Morsi; during the last one it called on protesters in Rabaa el-Adwyia and in al-Nahda to renounce violence and follow the roadmap with the rest of Egyptians. It said it will achieve the roadmap’s political, economic, and social goals and not allow any obstacles to prevent the Egyptians from a better future.
