Ethiopian refugees demonstrating in 6th of October City, Egypt
Cairo - Akram Ali
Ethiopian refugees demonstrating in 6th of October City, Egypt Dozens of Ethiopian refugees from the country’s Oromio tribe demonstrated in Cairo, Egypt on Sunday, protesting the alleged mistreatment by Egyptian citizens - following the announcement of the Renaissance dam project.
Protestors gathered in front of the headquarters of the United Nations office in the city of 6th October in Giza in solidarity with the Egyptian stance on the controversial initiative.
One activist, Abdul Qader Sheikh told Arab Today that the Oromio fled from Ethiopia to escape persecution for opposing the government. He said that Ethiopia is not in need of water and the objective of the dam will be built for political gains.
Sheikh added that the demonstrations are to confirm that the Oromio tribe is not related to the Ethiopian government, after many were harassed by Egyptians following the news of the dam.
Another protester, Mohamed Yahya, said the tribe suffers from persecution in Ethiopia, despite making up 45% of the population. He stated that the Ethiopian government neglects them in all decisions, including the construction of the dam.
Speaking to Arab Today, an official from the UN office in Cairo said that a meeting has been held to discuss the refugee’s demands and work to provide security and protection – as well as raising awareness that they are not affiliated with the Ethiopian government.
