Iraqi prison
Baghdad – Jaafar Al Nasrawy
The Iraqi Justice Ministry carried out death sentences against six convicted in terrorism cases on Thursday morning according to the fourth Article of Anti-Terrorism Act.
The ministry spokesman, Haidar Saadi, said in a statement that one of those convicted was arrested after escaping from Tasfirat
prison in Tikrit which belongs to the Interior Ministry. A number of prison guards at Abu Ghraib and some members of a special security force were injured during this clash between the two sides after the special force raided the prison in order to inspect it. The special force confiscated a number of mobile phones and Internet devices which belong to inmates in the prison.
The spokesperson for the Iraqi Parliament, Osama al Nujaifi, said during a meeting with the European Union ambassadors on September 27 that cancelling the death penalty does not cope with the current stage, but the ambassadors referred that the relationship between the EU and Iraq will be more developed if the latter reconsider the penalty laws.
The Iraqi Ministry of Human Rights declared on Wednesday that it is not the suitable time to cancel the death penalty amid the ongoing violent acts, noting that the legitimate responsibility of the Iraqi government is to take the deterrent measures against the criminals.
The Iraqi judiciary allows the death penalty against 50 crimes, most notably terrorism, kidnapping and murder in addition to other crimes such as damaging public properties.
