Fatah's central committee member Abbas Zaki
Fatah's central committee member Abbas Zaki has claimed that a Western airstrike on Syria would be an attack on Arabs all over the world.
The former representative of the Palestine Liberation Organisation in Lebanon said military intervention would only serve the interests of Israel.
In a statement, Zaki argued that the United States wanted to divide the Arab World, continuing the project started by former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
The Fatah official categorically rejected any military airstrike on Syria, adding it would have a severe impact on Arab national security.
Zaki said that only a peaceful solution in Syria would bring long-term peace and stability to the Middle East.
He urged the Syrian regime to do more to protect the Palestinian refugee camps.
The Palestinian official denounced the use of chemical weapons in Syria, but said that the attack does not justify a western military intervention.
Zaki accused the US of adopting double standards - and remaining silent in the face of Israeli atrocities against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Meanwhile, Israeli authorities are on high alert ahead of potential military interference in Syria. The Israeli cabinet met on Wednesday to discuss the recent developments in the country. The meeting was headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Several Israeli ministers presented the potential scenarios of a Western attack on Syria, with some observers warning that the Israeli government is not prepared for all eventual possibilities.
