Vice chairman of Palestinian Fatah movement Mahmoud al Aloul said on Tuesday that prospects for restoring Palestinian national unity are positive, underlining Egypt’s strenuous efforts exerted under President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to achieve Palestinian reconciliation.
Al Aloul told MENA that the Palestinian reconciliation was driven mainly by Egypt's efforts that was assigned by the Arab League (AL) to deal with the reconciliation file since 2007.
Al Aloul noted that the presence of the national government in Gaza Strip is considered as the first step towards accomplishing the reconciliation as we gave directives to Fatah cadres to provide all needed facilities to help in reconciliation.
We are aware that the process is not that easy, but we determined to remove obstacles as reconciliation currently represents a top priority, Al Aloul stated.
Al Aloul pointed out that the Palestinian issues has been negatively affected by the division therefore its position in all international forums was declined while regional as well as international actors preferred to escape liability towards the issue.
Declaration made by Hamas has facilitated reconciliation efforts by meeting conditions set by the Palestinian leadership including dissolving the administrative committee, enabling the national government to assume responsibility for the Gaza Strip and holding general elections, Al Aloul further said.
Regarding elections, he said that we will see first how things will go. After handing over responsibility of Gaza and the crossings, Fatah and Hamas will hold a meeting in Cairo followed by another between the Palestinian factions to discuss starting the implementation of the Hamas- Fatah agreement in Cairo 2011.
He said that the Palestinian president’s cancellation for measures that he had imposed on Gaza is just a first examination then we will consider the situation.
Cairo agreement stipulated forming a legal committee responsible for examining conditions of employees, he said adding that some Arab and foreign countries along with domestic parties seek to maintain division in Palestine but reconciliation is crucial to be able to engage in political negotiations.
