Thatcher became the first woman to lead the country, winning 3 general elections
Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has died after suffering a stroke, her spokesman Lord Bell has announced.
"It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher
announced that their mother Baroness Thatcher died peacefully following a stroke this morning,” Lord Bell said.
"A further statement will be made later."
Britain's Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister David Cameron have also expressed their sadness following the news on Monday lunchtime.
"The Queen was sad to hear the news of the death of Baroness Thatcher. Her Majesty will be sending a private message of sympathy to the family," Buckingham Palace said.
PM Cameron meanwhile said: "It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of Lady Thatcher. We have lost a great leader, a great Prime Minister and a great Briton."
Baroness Thatcher was Conservative prime minister from 1979 to 1990, winning general elections in 1979, 1983 and 1987.
She became the first woman to ever hold the post.
During her time in power, Thatcher courted controversy, presiding over a sustained battle with Arthur Scargill’s National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in the 1983 Miners’ Strike and taking on Argentina during the 1982 Falklands War.
Baroness Thatcher died aged 87.
