Amman – Osama Arrantissi
Jordanian security forces maintainted a heavy street presence early Saturday surrounding Gamal Abdel Nasser Square in central Amman as the country's March 24 Youth plan to celebrate
their first anniversary.
A sit-in is expected to be carried out in the Regency Hotel yard on Tuesday at 6pm, while there is news of another rally opposing to the March 24 Youth that will take place at the same time.
Scores of security vehicles with masked men onboard have been seen patrolling the area.
Activists said it was unlikely for the protesters to engage in an open-ended strike.
An activist, Moaz al-Khawalda, said that the youth groups had agreed to set a joint activity on this occasion, and that two rallies would meet at the Square. He urged Jordanians to participate in this demonstration so that they may “save the country from tyranny and corruption."
On March 24 last year Jordan witnesses a political turnin gpoint when a group of young people started a sit-in demanding comprehensive reform for the economically-troubled country.
Activists say that one year has passed and no reforms have been executed, pointing out that other Arab countries, such as Morocco, have made achievements towards democracy.
