US delegation celebrates Egypt’s revolution as ‘a source of inspiration’

US delegation celebrates Egypt’s revolution as ‘a source of inspiration’ Cairo – Akram Ali A US congressional delegation currently visiting Cairo, headed by Senator John McCain, has called for an intensification in relations between the two countries, while guardedly criticising statements made by Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi in 2010, in which he allegedly called Jewish people “vampires.”
The American envoy also suggested its support for Egypt hinged on improving relations with Israel.
Speaking at a press conference, Senator McCain said: "We discussed the parliamentary elections and how they should be consistent with global standards, as well as some concerns regarding religious minorities and women.”
Delegates met with Egyptian officials to discuss security concerns in the Sinai as well as Egypt’s commitments to support regional security.
“We support the aspirations of the Egyptian people,” McCain declared. “Your revolution was a source of inspiration.”
"We came to Cairo with only one message, that the Egyptian revolution gives us a chance to recast relations with Egypt,” McCain added, referring to years of American support for former President Hosni Mubarak.
Congressman Graham Lindsey, another delegate at the conference, said: "Economic, military and political relations with Egypt are of interest to America.”
Lindsey meanwhile expressed concerns over security issues in the Sinai region, warning “instability” could follow if Egypt fails to address them.
Lindsey claimed that better relations with Egypt also depended on President Mohammed Morsi improving relations with Israel.
“Unless the Congress is assured that you want to live in peace with Israel, it cannot promote its support for Egypt,” he announced at the Cairo conference.
Referring to remarks made by President Morsi in 2010 in which he allegedly called Jewish people “vampires,” Graham added: “We told President Morsi our opinion about the statements and we are sure he will do what he sees appropriate.”
