Worshippers at al-Aqsa mosque on 'Night of Power'
Ramallah – Nihad Al Taweel
A 40-year-old Palestinian man died after falling from the southern wall of the al-Aqsa mosque on Monday morning.
Hassan Suliman Abu Madam
, from the largely Bedouin city of Rahat in the Negev, fell between 30-40 metres, witnesses said.
It is believed Abu Madam slipped as he climbed the compound wall and asked a friend to take a picture of him.
Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of worshippers flocked to al-Aqsa mosque on Sunday evening to commemorate one of the holiest nights of Ramadan, Laylat al-Qadr (Night of Power).
The al-Aqsa Foundation described the turnout as "unprecedented," claiming more than 400,000 people had arrived from Jerusalem, Palestine and the West Bank.
"Most of the buildings and spaces of al-Aqsa mosque were full, and as evening prayers approached, the turnout increased further. Due to the big crowd, some people had to pray outside al-Aqsa's gates," the foundation said in a statement.?
The foundation added that around 200 al-Bayareq march buses had travelled from Palestinian cities and villages to al-Aqsa on Sunday night. In total, more than 1600 buses have transferred worshippers to the mosque since Ramadan began last month.
Earlier on Sunday, cashes broke out between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian youth at Bab al-Amoud, ?the main road which leads to the mosque. The Israeli army used sound bombs against the youth who had taken to the streets of Jerusalem after evening prayers.?
Israel forces tightened security in and around the mosque after noon, and closed several roads leading to the main entrance.
However, despite the heavy presence of officers, worshippers were able to move effectively and pray at the holy site in comfort.
