Palestinians to organize pot-and-pans protest for ending division
Gaza – Mohammed Habib
The Egyptian leadership decided to suspend its security delegation’s visit to Gaza and West Bank, which was scheduled to be in January, according to Palestinian sources. The sources
said that Egypt’s decision came in response to the "lack of commitment" of Fatah and Hamas to the reconciliation deal signed in Cairo.
It was reported that Egypt will send a security delegation to Gaza and West Bank to monitor the process of reconciliation on the ground, but special sources said that the visit was suspended after Egyptian official expressed frustration and pessimism of implementing the reconciliation.
The Egyptian decision came after continuous exchange of accusations between Fatah and Hamas, concerning a lack of commitment to the reconciliation.
Fatah said Saturday that “evidence on the ground show that Hamas hasn’t fulfilled anything of the Cairo agreement.”
Meanwhile, Hamas released its own statement on Saturday, accusing Fatah of undermining the terms of the reconciliation agreement by continuing to detain its party affiliates in the West Bank.
For his part, Mustafa Barghouti, the coordinator of the Freedom Committee for Palestinian reconciliation, said in a press release that the progress of political prisoners issue is very slow in Gaza and West Bank, adding that the implementation of some pending issues, such as passports, achieved some progress.
He pointed out that the security forces of both parties did not get orders to release the political prisoners, stressing the need to discuss this issue and its implementation mechanisms.
Meanwhile, Palestinian activists call for organizing a pot-and-pans protest, demanding the end the Palestinian division and implementation of the reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas.
The organizers said that Palestinians will protest against the slow progress in implementing the reconciliation by beating pots and pans on their houses’ roofs across the Palestinian territories starting February 1st at 7pm.According to Salah Abdelatty, a coordinator of “Loyalty to the martyrs, by ending the Palestinian division” campaign that organizes the event, the protest will continue for 10 minutes every day to put pressure on Palestinian factions to end the division and commit to the reconciliation agreement.
