The former director of Libyan intelligence, Abdullah Senussi
Nouakchott- Mohammed Sharif Aabidi

The former director of Libyan intelligence, Abdullah Senussi Media sources confirmed Tuesday in Nouakchott,  that the former director of Libyan intelligence, Abdullah Senussi who was in prison in Mauritania, left the country a few days ago to an unknown destination. The  fawasl.com website confirmed that Senussi is no longer where he was detained by the Mauritanian authorities. It added that private security guards who protected him and his sister's son, had returned to their duties in the military and security sectors in Nouakchott.
The informed source claimed  that Senussi left Mauritania for Mali by road, after a secret deal with the Mauritanian authorities for which he handed over money to buy his freedom.
International efforts continue to put pressure on the Mauritanian regime to hand over Senussi, brother-in-law of the late Colonel  Muammar Gaddafi of Libya. He is accused of  many international crimes and French officials, who also wish to try him for crimes against French interests, are concerned that  Mauritania would  hand over Senussi, especially to Libya which has strained relations with Nouakchott,  following statements made by Mostafa Abdul Jalil in which he said that any improvements in Libyan-Mauritanian relations would be dependent on the Mauritanian regime  handing over Senussi to the Libyan authorities.
Sources speaking to Arabstoday revealed that Sanussi and his nephew did not spend more than 6 hours in the civil prison in Nouakchott and that the civil prison administration arranged a private room equipped with air-conditioning for him to feel more comfortable in the hot temperatures of Mauritania. The same sources added that he arrived at the prison carrying five bags in addition to an envelope containing 25 thousand euros which were handed over to security. Police returned to the prison with orders to transfer Sanussi to "another place", which raised many questions today in the Mauritanian arena about where Sanussi had gone. There was speculation that he had been handed over to one of the international entities which  requested Mauritania on more than one occasion to hand him over;  most recently a Lebanese delegation which visited Mauritania  headed by the Amal leader of the Shiite movement,  and advisor to the Lebanese head of parliament, Ali Diab, who submitted a request to the Mauritanian government to allow Lebanese investigators to interrogate Sanussi  about the circumstances behind the disappearance of Shiite leader and Lebanese cleric Imam Moussa Sadr in Libya in the1980's.
Former director of Libyan intelligence Abdullah Sannusi and his nephew were arrested at Nouakchott International airport on March 17 and were transferred to the civil prison in Nouakchott amid tight security, after being charged with entering Mauritania with forged documents - according to the official line.  He was convicted in absentia in 1999 by France for his role in the bombing of a French UTA passenger plane in 1989.
