Secretary General of the Supreme Presidential Elections Commission, Hatem Bagato
Cairo – Akram Ali
The Secretary General of the Supreme Presidential Elections Commission (SPEC) Hatem Bagato said the election results will be announced on Sunday. The announcement comes as the Muslim Brotherhood warned
of a confrontation if their candidate, Mohammed Morsi, was not announced the winner.
According to the Brotherhood's Facebook page, the group considered the SPEC decision to postpone the results “legally invalid” and said that the delay contradicts with election laws that state the commission must announce the results within three days.
But Hatem Bagato hit back and stressed during a phone interview on Egyptian television programme al-Qahira al-Youm (Cairo Today) that SPEC cannot give in to any threats, and that it rules as per the law. He also affirmed that Sunday will be the date that official results are announced.
Bagato also revealed that Mohammed Morsi's camp filed 220 appeals, while his competitor, Ahmed Shafik's camp, filed 190. Both candidates had each announced victory in the run off.
In a statement posted on the Brotherhood web site, spokesperson Mahmoud Ghozlan, warned of a confrontation between the army and the people if Shafiq was announced to be the winner, stressing that the insistence of Shafiq’s campaign that he had won reveals the bad intentions of the ruling junta and the SPEC.
