Mutassim Uddin announces that the Sudanese army foiled a plot by the SRF
The Sudanese government has confirmed that it managed to thwart a possible attack by the opposition group, the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF), in the North Kordofan region of Darfur on Sunday.
In a statement released
earlier today, the Governor of North Kordofan, Mutassim Mirghani Hussein Zaki Uddin, announced that the Sudanese army foiled a plot by the SRF to attack government posts across the region. He said that armed forces and security agencies have been working together to monitor the movements of the SRF for weeks.
He also admitted that clashes between the army and SRF did eventually break out, after security forces entered the North Kordofan region, but insisted that the rebel group only managed to destroy 12 government SUVs.
Zaki Uddin also claimed that the SRF “suffered heavy losses in terms of lives and material.”
The Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) is a coalition between the rebel groups in Darfur, South Kordofan and Blue Nile.
Ministers governing the North Kordofan state are currently reviewing the security situation in the region following a spate of attacks by the SRF and other armed militia groups. A source who preferred not to be named told Arabstoday that security topped the agenda of a recent meeting between senior officials, who were discussing ways to deal with the SRF.
Authorities in North Kordofan also announced a state of emergency last week following violent clashes between government forces and rebel groups. As a result Zaki Uddin, ordered the opening of training camps for volunteers in the Popular Defence Force, a quasi-governmental force fighting alongside the Sudanese army.
