Rebels in North Darfur
Khartoum – Abdedalgoum Ashmeag
Seventy-seven members of the Revolutionary Front were killed by the Sudanese army on Thursday. The army declared in a statement that the Revolutionary Front attacked Hagar el Doom in South Kordofan. The Army retaliated until the
Revolutionary Front retreated to nearby towns, killing 21 people on the way - most of them were women and children.
Later on Thursday, some members of the Revolutionary Front attacked the town of Aradib Ahsra in North Darfur - the army killed 32 of them, wounded others and destroyed 10 of their armoured vehicles. Some soldiers died during the clashes.
The Sudanese Army promised to enforce security and stability.
The Revolutionary Front is formed of Darfurian armed movements and other popular movements in Blue Nile and South Kordofan states. Some of these movements oppose the Sudanese government and attempt to overthrow the government.
The Front has threatened in its last meeting with the Sudanese government to launch wide military attacks, especially South Kordofan.
The governor of North Darfur Youssif Kibir said to Arabstoday:
“Most of the armed movement and what is known as the Revolutionary Front are based in an area called Fanka, which is not far from the place of the clashes. Among these armed movements, there's a group that belongs to Arko Minawi, who worked for the president before returning to the Darfurian armed movements.
He pointed out that the region is mountainous and the existence of such movements is a threat to Darfur’s security.
