Israel deploys Iron Dome missiles close to the Syrian border
Damascus – George Al Shami
The Syrian regime has vowed to retaliate against an Israeli air strike, which targeted a Syrian research centre close to the Lebanese border this week, as allies Russia and Iran joined the international
condemnation against the attack.Syrian Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdel-Kareem Ali claimed that Damascus had the ability to attack Israeli targets, adding that the Syrian authorities have the right to take action.
Syria’s Foreign Ministry meanwhile submitted a formal complaint to the United Nations following the air raid.
Russia expressed anxiety over the recent escalation in violence in the region, claiming the Israeli raid represented a “violation of the sovereignty of the Syrian state.” Russia’s Foreign Minister said the attacks also violated the UN Charter.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Hussien Amir Allahyan warned of the repercussions of the Israeli attack, which hit a facility in Damascus province. The Arab League condemned the Israeli aggression, claiming it violated international law.
Former Israeli officials have meanwhile claimed the attack aimed to prevent an impending shipment of SA-17 surface-to-air anti-aircraft missiles, which President Bashar al-Assad’s regime was reportedly sending to Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Israeli Knesset member Tsahy Hangaby claimed that the recent air raids were not sufficient to confront Hezbollah.
