Eid al-Fitr prayers at Rabaa al-Adawiya Square in Cairo
Thousands of Egyptians gathered in Cairo's central Tahrir Square for Eid al-Fitr prayers on Thursday after a rebel group called for nationwide rallies against foreign interference in Egyptian affairs.
The Tamarod movement issued a statement on Wednesday evening urging Egyptians to pray at protest sites and rally against the visits of foreign envoys to the country. The group announced demonstrations in Tahrir Square and outside Ittihadiya presidential palace.
Heavy security was deployed around the square where Sheikh Gomaa Mohammed Ali led the prayers from the main platform.
Meanwhile, senior officials from the interim government performed Eid prayers at Cairo's Air Force mosque. Interim President Adly Mansour, Vice-President Mohamed ElBaradei, Defence Minister Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim attended the ceremony which was led by former mufti Ali Gomaa.
The imam told worshippers to denounce "those who call for violence, harm people and dress children in coffins," in reference to supporters of ousted Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi.
Earlier on Thursday, Morsi's wife, Naglaa Mahmoud, visited the Rabaa al-Adawiya Square sit-in.
She told protesters: "Egyptian people have shown they support the Islamists. We are in Allah’s party, the party of victory."
She added that although she hadn't heard from or met Morsi, she was confident that he would be reinstated as Egypt's president.
