Alastair Cook has scored centuries in all 5 of his Test matches as captain
England batting coach Graham Gooch thinks captain Alastair Cook has the potential to match Indian batsmen Sachin Tendulkar's records.
In an interview given to BBC Sport, Gooch said that 27-year old Cook is yet to reach his peak.
"I have always said that the best years for a batsman are 27 to 35. Alastair will be 28 years of age (on 25 December) and has got all the best years in front of him."
Cook became the youngest cricketer to reach reach 7,000 Test runs after scoring centuries in Mumbai and Kolkata to help England take a 2-1 lead over India, with the final match starting in Nagpur on Thursday. Gooch has been impressed with the skipper's technique: "Over the last six years or so he's worked lots on his game, his technique, his knowledge and I think what you see now is a product of all the hard work that he's put in to shape that game. What you saw in Mumbai was an exhibition of how to score runs on a turning wicket."
Gooch thinks the series is far from over and India will fight to level it up, having lost 10 of their last 16 Test matches. "I don't think for one minute that the guys think the job is done. We're 2-1 up with one to play. We want a positive result in Nagpur. It's going to be a result pitch in Nagpur."
Alastair Cook has scored 7,103 Test runs and is closing in on Gooch's England run record of 8,900.
