One World Trade Centre to become New York's tallest skyscraper
The Freedom Tower, or One World Trade Center, has become New York's tallest building.
It has overtaken the Empire State Building, after a steel column was lifted into place on the
100th floor.
Work on the building began in April 2006, and when the Freedom Tower is finished, it will have 104 floors.
In its latter stages, it will have an antenna added, making it the tallest building in the US.
The Freedom Tower stands on the site where terrorist attacks destroyed the World Trade Center's Twin Towers on September 11 2001.
One construction worker told British News agency, the BBC: "It's a beautiful thing that we have up there but it's a horrible reason to have to put it up."
However this milestone is a preliminary one. Workers are still adding floors and the tower is not expected to reach its full height for at least another year, at which point it will be declared the tallest building in the US, and third tallest in the world.
