The spokesman for Algeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amar Belani has claimed that the government has paid off the debts of 14 African countries, totalling $902 million, since 2010
.
Explaining the gesture, Belani said that Algeria is keen to support small states, adding that their stability would ultimately lead to economic and social prosperity in Africa.
The spokesman disclosed the fact during a reception to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). The 14 states being supported are Benin, Burkina Faso, Congo, Ethiopia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Seychelles, and Tanzania.
