Comme des Garçons SS 2013
Comme des Garçons and Hermés have announced they will be collaborating on two silk scarf collections. Designed by the head of Comme Des Garcon Rei Kawakubo, the Noir et Blanc line will feature five
monochrome pieces whilst the Couleur collection will contain six bright geometric designs.
The iconic Hermès silk square carrés scarf was first introduced in 1937 so this collaboration with a modern designer known for her explosive energy and avant-garde aesthetic signals an interesting move for the heritage Parisian brand. The scarves have been used as a sling by Princess Grace for her broken arm and featured around the neck of the Queen on the British postage stamp so perhaps we will see pieces from the collection on Kate Middleton, who is known for championing contemporary designers such as Erdem.
“I have always had an immense respect for Hermès’ tradition and artisanal know-how,” Kawakubo told WWD. “During this joint project, rather than being guided by the idea of the scarf as it is worn, I became interested instead in the beautiful ‘artworks’ that the designs on Hermès carrés represent, and I sought to change them by adding elements. By combining them with abstract images, we have transformed the carré and created a unique object.”
