The British Foreign Office (FCO) issued a statement on Friday warning all British citizens against travelling to Lebanon.
"Britons should avoid all but essential
travel to Lebanon because of a heightened risk of anti-Western sentiment linked to the possibility of military action in Syria" the statement said.
A Foreign Office spokesman said: "The UK remains strongly committed to Lebanese stability and will continue to implement a 120 million US dollar stability package, including humanitarian support and capacity building with the Lebanese armed forces. Nonetheless, we advise UK nationals to be vigilant, to avoid any protests or demonstrations and to keep up to date with developments."
The statement urged citizens to "completely avoid" areas including the Mediterranean port of Tripoli, the southern suburbs of Beirut and the Palestinian refugee camps.
