SsangYong XIV-2 concept
SsangYong may not be a household name in the United States, but the South Korean manufacturer has a strong global presence and is best known for its four-wheel-drive SUVs,
Last year’s Frankfurt Auto Show surprise hit was the automaker’s XIV-1 compact crossover concept, so SsangYong is showing off its XIV-2 concept at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.
A modestly restyled, retractable-roof version of the XIV-1, the XIV-2 (which stands for eXciting User Interface Vehicle, model 2) promises to offer a “special experience with fun” that will deliver the wind-in-the-hair experience both on and off road. SsangYong has used global design clinics to maximize the XIV-2’s appeal to Millennial shoppers.
Using a design similar to that employed by Fiat in the 500 Cabriolet, the fabric top of the XIV-2 retracts at the press of a button. To emphasize the sporting character of the XIV-2, SsangYong blends carbon fiber exterior trim with red accents on the interior, and all four passengers benefit from bucket seats.
The XIV-2 crossover is headed to production, and will be available in Europe in both gasoline and diesel models. SsangYong says that both versions are Euro VI compliant, and both are available with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The XIV-2 will come in 5-door, 3-door, coupe and extended body versions.
