Egyptian journalist Gamal Abdel Rahim
Egypt’s press syndicate welcomed the judicial rule issued by the administrative court on Wednesday to return Egyptian journalist Gamal Abdel Rahim to his position as the editor-in-chief
of Al Joumhouria Newspaper.
The court asserted that the decision to replace Abdel Rahim was illegal as the new editor-in-chief came to the position before he completed his term.
The association said in a statement that the ruling proved that the decision taken by Egypt’s Shura Council to fire Abdel Rahim was against the law. It described the rule as a victory for press freedom.
Spokesperson of Egypt’s Shura Council, Ahmed Fahmy, announced during his meeting two weeks his intention to oppose any final judicial ruling that would return Abdel Rahim to his former position.
The court, however expressed that complete freedom of the Egyptian press cannot be achieved without allowing journalists publish their opinions.
