Former first female Pakistani Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hina Rabbani Khar Fourteen Pakistani women have successfully won seats in parliament, according to unofficial results of the May 11 Pakistan elections. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced on Tuesday that five National and nine Provincial Assembly seats were won by female candidates.
The first National Assembly seat was gained by Sumaira Malik, a candidate of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz from NA-69 Khushab-I who won with 118,108 votes, beating Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf candidate Umar Aslam Khan, who secured 78,855.
The second successful candidate was Ghulam Bibi Bharwana, who acquired 87,002 votes taking a lead of 19000 votes from Makhdoomzada Syed Asad Hayat who secured 68,850 votes as an independent candidate, Pakistan Today reports.
Daughter of former Pakistan President Rafiq Tarrar, Saira Afzal Tarrar, took the third National Assembly seat with 93,013 votes.
There are 70 seats set aside for women and minorities that are apportioned to the parties based on how well they do in the general election.
The official results are yet to be announced.
