Asmaa Mahfouz
A court for misdemeanours in Cairo has issued a verdict in absentia against the political activist Asmaa Mahfouz, who is to be jailed for one year and fined $350 for assaulting a citizen called
Abdel Aziz Fahmy.
Asmaa's family appealed against the verdict, insisting the assault was fake, as Asmaa: "has never met Fahmy in her life". The political activist’s father, Mahfouz Abdel Halim, commented: "It is impossible to believe that Asmaa assaulted a man of my age. This is an attempt to distort my daughter’s reputation".
Asmaa said on Twitter: "This is a never-ending series of attempts to ruin my reputation and knock me out of the political arena. It happened before to other activists, such as Alaa Abd Al-Fattah and Ahmed Douma. I hadn’t even heard of this case until two days before the judgment session". Asmaa then addressed her opponents by saying: "Fear God’s judgment, you who are insulting the revolution by blaming it for anything wrong in this country”.
