Raha Moharrak’s raised $1 million for charity
Twenty-five-year-old Raha Moharrak’s Everest ascent was doubly groundbreaking.
The graphic design graduate from Jeddah became the first Saudi woman and the youngest Arab to reach the
world’s highest summit.
Moharrak said: "I really don't care about being the first, so long as I inspire someone else to be second."
In a biography on her website, the Dubai resident said that convincing her conservative Muslim family to support her climb was "as great a challenge as the mountain itself."
Moharrak climbed with Mohammed al-Thani, a member of Qatar's royal family, Raed Zidan, a Palestinian businessman and Masoud Mohammad, an Iranian living in Dubai who owns an ice-cream franchise.
Zidan was the first Palestinian man to scale Everest, and al-Thani the first Qatari.
The four team members, who have dubbed themselves “Arabs with Altitude,” announced their plan to conquer the world’s tallest peak two months ago.
The expedition aimed to raise one million dollars for Nepali education projects.
