UNAMID deputy Mohamed Yunis The African Union-United Nation Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) in collaboration with the ministries of social affairs on woman and child affairs in the five Darfur states organised a series of open days on the UN resolution 1325 on woman, peace and security. The events focused on the role of woman’s civil society organisations in contributing to the prevention and resolution of armed conflicts and in peace making.
The participants elaborated the achievements and recommendations carried out in implementation of U.N resolution 1325 in the region. The open days gathered women representatives from civil society groups, non-governmental organisations and local authorities and UNAMID officials.
UNAMID deputy joint special representative Mohamed Yunis pointed out the role of women’s organisation in contributing to the peace process and deepening confidence between communities. He added: “Although a distinguished progress has been made, we still need to support women’s role in peace making. For the sake of well-established society, we have to give equal opportunities to all people”.
The head of UNAMID Gender Advisory Unit, Yegerawork Angagaw, explained that the events have provided an opportunity for women to assume full ownership of UNSCR 1325 and cement their commitment in ensuring its implementation.
Alfatah Abdel Aziz, deputy Wali of north Darfur expressed continues support to facilitate the working of women’s groups in Darfur, adding that the government will adopt the suitable outcome and will collaborate with UNAMID to implement the resolution. The participants highlight the progress made so far and the impact of the resolution on their daily lives and the basic aspects of protection, participation in the peace process, women’s right and socio-economic empowerment. The participants issued their recommendations to reinforce the implementation of the resolution such as the need to reach out women in rural areas; to enlighten them about gender based issues so as to prevent and reconcile struggles within society. Finally, all participants signed a Declaration on the implementation of UNSCR 1325 in Darfur, where the announcement will be introduced to the five Darfur states as well as to the office of the Sudan President and UN President.
