DUBAI - Arab Today

Believe it or not, a Pakistani man has offered to bail out a homeless British woman in Dubai if she agrees to marry him.

No joke this, the bizarre proposal was made by the man to Christine, a Dubai-based law graduate, after XPRESS published a report highlighting the plight of the 40-year-old along with her mother Lynette, 62, and sister Sherry, 32, last week.

The trio had fallen on bad times and were roughing it out at airports, restaurants and even the streets, after their debt-ridden consultancy in Jumeirah Lake Towers (JLT) had collapsed.

Text message

As hundreds wrote in extending support, even accommodation, to the displaced family, the Pakistani man’s message was received by Christine via text on her phone

The message read as follows: “You are from British (sic) right? I am Pakistani. I am looking for a British girl to get married. Then I will also help you. Are you interested?”

An appalled Christine, who did not respond, told XPRESS, “It’s easy for people to take advantage under such circumstances. It’s the same with the job situation. Some people ask for your CV because they are nosy. When you chase them up, they say they have no vacancies. Or they will try and offer you a salary that is very low.”

Put up in a hotel apartment in Bur Dubai now, Christine said she and her family were grateful to the management who had offered them a 30-day stay. “Another hotel apartment has also offered us two-three month accommodation which we will take up next month. We are very thankful.”

She said although many people had reached out to them, they had not landed any interview for possible employment. “We just hope someone will be able to give us a job, so we can work and repay our debts.”

The family’s troubles began after their company’s operations shut down in December last year. Describing themselves as “victims of circumstance, not criminals”, Christine said she is banking on hope and wished that their lives would return to normal as soon as possible
