US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta arrived in Tripoli today on a brief visit to Libya where an interim government has been struggling to assert its authorities since the death of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi two months ago.
The visit follows a resolution by the UN Security Council to lift sanctions on the Central Bank of Libya and an affiliated unit in a move to unblock their assets abroad, which are worth billions of US dollars.
The step aims to reduce the monetary crisis facing the north African country.
