BurJuman’s breast cancer awareness programme: “Safe and Sound Campaign,” will offer women 5,000 free UniCare clinical examination vouchers during the campaign’s 15th edition this October, to commemorate International Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Vouchers will be available for pick up on a first-come-first-served basis at the information counters at BurJuman mall and will be valid for use until Nov.30, 2011. The voucher will entitle the holder to a free clinical examinations. On collecting the voucher, individuals will have to contact UniCare on 043529292 to book an appointment at the medical centre located on the ground floor of the North Wing of BurJuman. With early detection being the highest contributor to survival — treatment success rates being as high as 90 per cent among cases detected at an early stage — regular check-ups can greatly increase an individual’s chances of beating the disease. Three examination routes are recommended to make sure early signs are not overlooked. Starting from the age of 20, all women are encouraged to undertake regular clinical breast exams when visiting their gynaecologists. Women aged 40 and over are furthermore advised to undergo an annual mammogram. However, in addition to seeking medical channels, women are also advised to go in for monthly self-examinations.
