Guidelines for different ailments and practices with regards to fasting has been issued by the Ministry of Health (MoH) , as Ramadan comes to a close.

The ministry issued guidelines for dealing with different medical conditions while fasting in Ramadan and recommended that heart patients who are fasting should eat their Iftar at regular intervals, and avoid food with high fat and salt content. It added that patients should also consult their doctors for all serious conditions, in order to arrange medicine dosage and timings.

“Diabetics should ensure that they monitor blood sugar during fasting, and arrange their meals such that they avoid low blood sugar levels,” the ministry said.

MoH also encouraged individuals to engage in physical activity during the holy month, advising that people should exercise either just before Iftar, or two hours later.

The ministry recommended that individuals be mindful of fasting in the summer heat.

“To overcome thirst during Ramadan, you must drink two to three litres a day. You must avoid carbonated and caffeinated drinks. You should eat fruits and vegetables that are rich in water and fibre. You should avoid salty or spicy food.”

It also warned that drivers should maintain safe habits during the month, including only driving with full energy levels. The ministry urged drivers to stop to take a short nap if they are driving for long distances.

With regards to individuals travelling for the Umrah pilgrimage, the ministry advised that pilgrims should keep to preventive and hygienic measures while performing the pilgrimage.

It also recommended that any returning pilgrim should seek medical help if they feel symptoms of inflammation in their respiratory systems within two weeks of their return.

Additionally, the ministry issued safe practices for women to adopt, if they are pregnant or breastfeeding.

“Women fasting while pregnant and breastfeeding should commit to a balanced diet, and increase their intake of fluids to avoid dehydration. They should also attempt to reduce physical exertion during fasting hours.”
