India is carrying out a massive rescue and relief operation in Nepal to help victims of a major earthquake which struck the Himalayan country one week ago, said an Indian Army general on Saturday.

The local daily The Himalayan Times quoted Major General J.S. Sandhu of the Indian Army as saying the Indian army is carrying out the operation in close coordination with the Nepali Army.

He said Indian search and rescue worker including military personnel have reached the inaccessible areas of the devastated villages of quake-hit districts and "all humanitarian activities were being performed jointly with Nepali Army".

Indian search and rescue personnel have rescued at least 60 people so far from debris and evacuated over 1,000 from marooned areas to safety, said Sadhu, who is commanding an Indian task force in Nepal after the earthquake.

About a dozen Indian military helicopters have been fetching quake victims and bringing relief goods over the past one week, he said.

Meanwhile, Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval Friday met with Nepali prime minister Sushil Koirala here to express Delhi's support to the neighboring country, said the newspaper.

Doval also conveyed the condolences of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Nepal over the massive human losses in the disaster.

More than 6,600 people have been killed in the devastating quake in Nepal.
