Tutu no longer receiving intravenous treatment

Nobel Peace Laureate Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu was no longer receiving intravenous treatment but would remain under observation in hospital for another few days, his daughter, the Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu, said on Monday.

Tutu was in good spirits when she visited the hospital on Sunday, and filled with gratitude for the care he was receiving and for the love and prayers of friends around the world, Reverend Canon Tutu said.

The Archbishop, 83, was admitted to a Cape Town hospital last Tuesday to treat a stubborn infection. The treatment was not related to the prostate cancer that Tutu had been managing for the past 18 years, according to Canon Tutu.

The medication he was receiving for his prostate was effective and his prostate-specific antigen count was negligible, she said.

Tutu and his wife, Leah, celebrated 60 years of their marriage earlier this month in Orlando West, Soweto, southwest of Johannesburg. That was his last public appearance.
