The US Department of State said Monday it is closely monitoring the outbreak of the Ebola virus in West Africa after two US citizens contracted the virus in Liberia.
"We continue to provide a range of support and assistance to those countries and organizations responding to the outbreak, including through the provision of personal protective equipment and other essential supplies," Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki said.
"We're taking every precaution, of course, as would be expected, and the U.S. missions in the - in the areas have distributed messages to U.S. citizens as well, and of course, we extend our sympathies to the families of those who have died," she stated.
Psaki added: "We will continue to engage with that. In terms of what we're considering, I don't have anything to predict. We're taking every precaution, of course." The US has utilized several of its agencies to help with the outbreak response efforts, including the US Agency for International Development (USAID), Health and Human Services (HHS), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases.
