Vienna - Wam

Austrian Press Agency reported thatVienna, among 17 European cities, Vienna comes fourth in the fight against fine dust emissions, according to a survey presented by the Traffic Club of Austria (VCOe) on Wednesday. The VCOe warned of grave health hazards from fine dust pollution. Each year, the particles caused nearly half a million premature deaths in the EU, the organisation said in a press statement. For the study, four German environmental organisations tested measures carried out in the past five years to improve the quality of the air. Among the measures analysed were obligatory filters for building machines and old lorries, infrastructural improvements for pedestrians and cyclists and more flexible parking fees.At the top of the ranking was Berlin, where 84 percent of the steps had been implemented, followed by Copenhagen and Stockholm (82 percent each) and Vienna and Zurich (80).Considerably lower were Graz with 64 percent, Madrid and London (58 percent each), Milan (44) and Rome (38).
