Manama - Agencies

Bahraini protester Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja, has gone back on a hunger strike after endign an eight-day hunger strike last week. Al-Khawaja was one of the 14 people convicted of leading last year's pro-democracy uprisings in Bahrain that resulted in a brutal crackdown by Bahraini security forces aided by Saudi troops. Since then uprisings against the Kingdom's monarch King Hamad have continued, while an independent investigatory commission last year found security forces guilty of "grossly abusing" detainees. Al-Khawaja will resume his hunger-strike before the one-year anniversary of the protests against the ruling Al-Khalifa family on February 14. "Al-Khawaja said in a telephone call to his family: 'Freedom or death,' which means he started an open hunger strike until his release," said the Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights on its website.
