Dubai - Arab Today

The sheikhdom of Dubai, part of the Gulf state United Arab Emirates, will increase the number of taxi cars by 40 percent from 5,000 to 7,000 by 2021, said Mattar Al-Tayer, Director-General of the Transport Authority (RTA) here Saturday.

The five-year plan Al-Tayer has approved envisages beefing-up the fleet of the Dubai Taxi Corporation, and will also see number of limousines to rise by 340 percent from 113 vehicles in 2015 to 500 vehicles by 2021.

Based on the five-year plan, the strategic goals of RTA are designed to provide "advanced transit systems capable of bringing happiness to users," RTA said in emailed statement.

Dubai is also home to the only city metro system (as yet) on the Arab peninsula, but the metropolis suffers from chronic traffic jams during the high tourist season (October till June) and from shortage of parking space.
