Lebanon’s two top anti-Damascus leaders accused Syrian President Bashar al-Assad of assassinating a top Lebanese security official in a car bomb attack on Friday in Beirut. "We accuse Bashar al-Assad of the assassination of Wissam al-Hassam, the guarantor of the security of the Lebanese," former prime minister and opposition chief Saad Hariri told a Lebanese TV station. “I openly accuse Bashar al-Assad and his regime of killing Wissam al-Hassan,” added Druze leader Walid Jumblat. The car bomb killed the top senior official, General Wissam al-Hassan, connected to the anti-Damascus camp in Lebanon on Friday further raising tensions over the war in the neighbouring country, according to officials. The rush-hour bombing in a busy square of the predominantly Christian district of Ashrafieh killed at least seven other people and injured 72, sources said. General Wissam al-Hassan was the intelligence chief of Lebanon's internal security forces.
