Baghdad - Jaafar Nasrawy

The Iraqi police have announced plans to protect mayors in the province of Diyala, north of Baghdad. The move follows recent attacks launched on mayors from militants groups. Iraqi mayors are closely linked to security forces and inform officials of the actions and moves of militant groups. They are said to play a key role in securing the region. Abdul Hussein Al-Shammari, from Diyala police told Arabstoday that the plan would focus on sensitive areas in Baqubah which are frequently targeted by militants. Shammari said that the police would have a communication plan between mayors and security system to offer immediate help in case of emergency. Twenty attacks against mayors were recorded in a few months. Fifteen mayors have resigned last summer under the militant threat.
